We also offer recommendations for further research to strengthen the scholarship on urban agriculture.

This report examines how urban farming can help communities by improving access to healthy food, improving economic health, and helping to revitalize communities. It reviews common challenges to urban agriculture for low-income and other disadvantaged communities and offers innovative strategies for overcoming those challenges. It also presents examples of potential policy approaches that help ensure benefits for communities by involving them in policy development and advocacy steps to identify and advance an urban agriculture policy agenda.

The present paper aims to provide an overview of urban agriculture by examining it as it relates to issues of food security, the economy, social dimensions and the environment. Using short case studies and drawing on research from both Europe and the USA, the paper further explores the potential impact that urban agriculture can have and sets out its policy context. Looking to the future, one of the many challenges facing urban agriculture will be how it will achieve the necessary integration across all relevant EU policy area
